Technics SL-PG 480A (CD Player): [Note: It also works with some other Technics CD players and CD changers. Just try.] "Service Mode" To enter service mode, which displays additional status information (I don't yet know what it exactly means), follow these steps: (1) Make sure that the CD player is in standby mode (red LED is ON) (2) Now, press and hold these three keys: [Stop], [Pause] and [Play]. (They are lying beneath each other in the lower right corner so it won't be a problem) (3) Switch the SL-PG480A on, and, after ca. 2 seconds, release the 3 keys and there you are. (4) Now you're in Service mode. In Stop mode, an error code like "E-12" is displayed (if there is one). If the player is operating correctly the code is E-00. In play mode you see some more status information: (5) Each of the 2-digit-pairs, "INDEX", "MIN" and "SEC" displays a status bit: "F" (the little one), "t" and "C". A "_" right of the letter means 0 and a "~" means 1. (_ and ~ are the lower and upper segments). (6) Insert a disc, press play and look. Yes, it isn't very beautiful but it is a hidden feature. I don't really know what the status display means, but I think the "t" means "tracking" because whenever you're "scratching" over the disk (e. g. while searching, skipping, peak search or even in pause mode), the bit is 1 (~). In pause mode it oscillates between _ and ~ . (7) To exit sevice mode, switch off and on. To stay in service mode but temporarily switch to normal time display (min:sec), press [Stop] and then [Time Mode].
